The Issue
On January 6th, in your op-ed published in The Hill, you wrote that ¡°those leading the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol are undermining the U.S.-South Korea alliance.¡± The Hill
Are you aware that on December 3rd of last year, Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law and staged a self-coup using loyalist forces, throwing South Korea into chaos for over a month? As a Korean-American, doesn¡¯t this situation deeply concern and sadden you, even beyond your role as a U.S. politician? Isn¡¯t it commendable to see South Korea¡¯s democratic citizens braving severe winter conditions to protest every day, defending their democracy against such actions, while the parliament works through democratic procedures to address the crisis? The global community watches in admiration as South Korean citizens safeguard democracy amidst adversity.
Reports suggest that Yoon Suk-yeol consumed numerous provocative and misleading videos from far-right YouTubers before declaring martial law. This raises questions about your understanding of South Korea¡¯s history and current situation. Could your perspective have been influenced by similar sources? Even if you immigrated to the U.S. at a young age, it is surprising and disappointing that your understanding, as a member of Congress, appears less informed than that of many second-generation Korean Americans and even non-Koreans.
Furthermore, in 2021, you led an effort with 33 other lawmakers to send a letter to the Biden administration opposing the ¡°End of the Korean War Declaration.¡± Pastor Jun Kwang-hoon, a vocal figure currently opposing Yoon Suk-yeol¡¯s impeachment in South Korea, has publicly claimed, ¡°I persuaded Congresswoman Young Kim to derail the Korean peace bill.¡± Such a statement could indicate a violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), a serious offense. We urge you to clarify whether you acted on behalf of foreign interests to obstruct legislation and whether any improper political contributions were involved.
During election campaigns, you frequently appeal to Korean American communities, promising to ¡°represent their voices and concerns in Congress.¡± However, your actions suggest a betrayal of these promises, appearing to dismiss the interests and struggles of South Koreans, your heritage, and the values of democracy.
To set the record straight:
¡°It is Yoon Suk-yeol and his allies, responsible for acts of treason, who have disrupted democracy and the rule of law. They, not the citizens standing against them, are the ones jeopardizing the U.S.-South Korea alliance.¡±
If you do not fully understand the situation, it is better to refrain from taking a stance.
As global democratic citizens, we demand the following from you, Congresswoman Young Kim:
1. Apologize immediately for disrespecting South Korea¡¯s democracy and its democratic citizens.
2. Retract your anti-democratic and anti-peace statements supporting Yoon Suk-yeol, whose actions have undermined South Korea¡¯s constitutional order.
3. Commit yourself to listening to the voices of Korean Americans and working to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and uphold democracy in South Korea.
